Do you remember the first time you visited Westgate? T&T Childrenswear were on the main corner and United Video was where the Foodhall now is and was booming because we were all still renting videos! L.D Nathan’s Deka occupied from the Sharing Shed down to Stirling Sports, now there’s a blast from the past! (Deka stores converted to Farmers stores in 2001).
Excavation of the land that is Westgate Shopping Centre first began in the early 1990’s when it was bought by NZRPG (known then as Westland Limited) in 1998 construction of the first stage began.
The TAB and Pizza Hut were built in 2001, followed by The Outlet Centre in 2004 and the Pavilion building (Starbucks through to Toyworld) in 2005, along with the Banking Chambers (ANZ/Westpac).
Then in 2006 the Westgate Drive extension was added to the back of The Warehouse (AA through to Ballentynes).
Westgate has continued to evolve over time and NZRPG’s vision of expanding Westgate into a Town became more of a reality as opportunities came to acquire more land adjacent to the Centre. What was once a few houses, paddock, strawberry fields and kiwifruit vines, is fast becoming your Westgate Town Centre. Westgate is no longer ‘at the end of the Northwest motorway’, we have long been the hub of our community and are now a Town with easy access to all Aucklanders since the opening of the motorway extension in 2011.
